Due to the burden to the Social Insurance System as well as the society as a whole in other aspects, the Government of Vietnam has set out a law to increase the retirement age for employees starting from 2022.
According to Article 169 of the 2019 Labor Code, the retirement age in 2022 will increase compared to 2021 dramatically.
Specifically, the retirement age in 2022 for labor in normal labor conditions is 55 years old and 8 months for women, and 60 years old and 6 months for men.
As can see from the law, the retirement age in 2022 for both women and men has increased by several months. Compared to 2021, the retirement age for male workers has been added for another 3 months, meanwhile, the retirement age for female workers has been increased by another 4 months.
The retirement age in 2022 for employees will correspond to the month, year of birth.
For example, if a male worker was born in October 1961, he will receive a pension in May 2022 because he has a retirement age of 60 years old and 6 months.
This is due to the retirement time being the end of the last day of the retirement age according to the regulations.
In case the employee continues to work after reaching the retirement age according to regulations, the retirement time is the time the labor contract is terminated.
The retirement plan of the Vietnam government to 2035
The change in the retirement age of 2022 is just a part of the big plan to completely change the retirement regime in Vietnam. With these changes in the following years or decades, the society of Vietnam will greatly improve their living standards and at the same time, relieve the burden on the country’s social insurance fund.
From 01/01/2021, the retirement age of workers in normal labor conditions is sufficient 60 years 3 months for male workers and 55 years 4 months for female workers.

After that, every year, there will be an increase of 3 months for male workers and 4 months for female workers, specifically:
The retirement age for male workers in normal labor conditions:
+ In 2021: 60 years old 3 months
+ In 2022: 60 years old 6 months
+ In 2023: 60 years old 9 months
+ In 2024: 61 years old
+ In 2025: 61 years old 3 months
+ In 2026: 61 years old 6 months
+ In 2027: 61 years old 9 months
+ From 2028 onwards: 62 years old.
– Retirement age for female workers in normal labor conditions:
+ In 2021: 55 years old 4 months
+ In 2022: 55 years old 8 months
+ In 2023: 56 years old
+ In 2024: 56 years old 4 months
+ In 2025: 56 years old 8 months
+ In 2026: 57 years old
+ In 2027: 57 years old 4 months
+ In 2028: 57 years old 8 months
+ In 2029: 58 years old
+ In 2030: 58 years old 4 months
+ In 2031: 58 years old 8 months
+ In 2032: 59 years old
+ In 2033: 59 years old 4 months
+ In 2034: 59 years old 8 months
+ From 2035 onwards: 60 years old
From 2021 onwards, workers who have their working ability reduced; do special heavy, toxic and dangerous work; do heavy, toxic and dangerous work; etc. may have their retirement age lower but not more than 5 years compared to workers working in normal labor conditions.
In addition, employees with highly qualified and technical qualifications can have their retirement age higher but not exceeding 5 years compared to workers working in normal labor conditions.
