The Madrid system of international trademark registration is administered by the International Bureau of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) of the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. As of the end of 2023, the Madrid System is comprised of 114 members from 130 countries, collectively known as the Madrid Alliance. These countries represent more than 80% of world trade. The article shall list member states of the Madrid System, including the Madrid Agreement and the Madrid Protocol.
Knowing the list of member countries is extremely important and necessary for trademark applicants to choose an effective and cost-effective method of trademark registration: Registering a trademark directly in each country or registering a trademark via Madrid.
