Recently, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) of India announced the acceptance of a petition to initiate an anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigation on calcium carbonate filler masterbatch originating from or imported from Vietnam.
Calcium carbonate filler masterbatch is a plastic compound widely used in the plastics industry, created by combining calcium carbonate (CaCO3) powder with base resins such as polyethylene or polypropylene. This compound helps reduce production costs without compromising quality while enhancing the strength and impact resistance of plastic products. The use of calcium carbonate not only increases stiffness and tensile strength but also improves processing capabilities during manufacturing. Being environmentally friendly, calcium carbonate is a natural and safe material.
This masterbatch is extensively applied in the production of plastic products such as plastic bags, bottles, and films, as well as in packaging, construction, paints, and inks. With adjustable particle sizes and uniform dispersion, calcium carbonate filler masterbatch offers optimal performance for various plastic products, contributing to the sustainable development of the industry.
The production of calcium carbonate filler masterbatch in Vietnam is experiencing strong growth due to the development of the plastics industry and the increasing demand for plastic products both domestically and for export. Vietnam has many calcium carbonate production plants, along with masterbatch manufacturing facilities, supplying a significant volume of products to the domestic market.
Companies in the plastics industry have invested in modern production technologies to improve the quality and performance of calcium carbonate filler masterbatch while reducing costs. This enhances the competitiveness of Vietnamese products in the international market.
Moreover, with the rapid development of industries such as construction, packaging, and home appliance manufacturing, the demand for calcium carbonate filler masterbatch is also on the rise. Forecasts indicate that production of this product will continue to grow in the coming years, driven by increased investment and infrastructure development.
However, this growth also poses a risk for Vietnamese companies producing calcium carbonate filler masterbatch, as they may face anti-dumping and countervailing duty investigations from international trade remedy authorities, particularly India.
In the event of a decision to initiate an investigation, the DGTR will issue a notification and provide questionnaires for foreign manufacturers, exporters, and the Vietnamese government (for countervailing investigations) to gather relevant information and documentation related to the case.
