Starting March 4, 2025, all aluminum and steel imports into the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff, according to a new decision signed by President Donald Trump.
“We will impose a 25% tariff on all aluminum and steel imports, with no exceptions. This will encourage more businesses to manufacture in the USA,” President Trump announced on February 10, 2025, immediately after signing the executive order in the Oval Office. He had previously unveiled this plan on February 9, 2025.
The new policy will officially take effect on March 4, 2025. President Trump emphasized that this measure aims to boost domestic production, create more jobs for American workers, and warned that tariffs could be raised even further in the future.
Under the new regulation, the aluminum import tariff will increase from 10% (in place since 2018) to 25%. Countries previously exempt from aluminum and steel tariffs will no longer receive these benefits.
Additionally, Trump has mandated that imported steel must be “melted and poured” in North America to restrict Chinese products from entering the USA market. A similar rule will apply to aluminum.
Trade experts believe this measure will help the USA reduce reliance on foreign supplies in critical industries such as aluminum and steel, prevent dumping, promote domestic production, and safeguard key industries related to national security.
During his first term, President Trump imposed a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum. However, some trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, and Brazil, were granted exemptions. President Joe Biden later expanded these exemptions to include the United Kingdom, Japan, and the European Union (EU).
According to the American Iron and Steel Institute, the largest sources of USA steel imports are Canada, Brazil, Mexico, South Korea, and Vietnam. For aluminum, Canada accounted for 79% of total USA imports in the first 11 months of last year, while Mexico also played a significant role as a supplier.
Global trade tensions have escalated in recent weeks as President Trump signed an order imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico and a 10% tariff on goods from China. However, on February 3, he temporarily suspended tariffs on Canada and Mexico after reaching an agreement on anti-smuggling and immigration issues with both countries.
Regarding China, USA tariffs remain in effect as of February 4. In response, China has imposed tariffs ranging from 10% to 15% on American goods, launched an antitrust investigation against Google, tightened exports of key metals, and blacklisted two USA companies.
Despite being the world’s largest steel producer and exporter, China exports very little steel to the USA The 25% tariff imposed during the 2018 USA-China trade war already restricted most Chinese steel from entering the American market. In total, only 508,000 tons of Chinese steel were exported to the USA last year, accounting for just 1.8% of total USA steel imports.
